on the other end of the spectrum, in the American workforce, norms around workplace behavior drive parents out of the workforce on a regular basis, because the workforce does not tolerate flexibility. it seeks to break domestic bonds in pursuit of the workaholic holy grail, fortified by the norms of industrialism and the eight hour work day. work comes first, family second.
