I've decided that there are two kinds of food and drink industry mindsets in what is considered 'hip' -- the mindset that is all about local economy and sustainable farm to table, grain to glass philosophies, and the kind that props up trendiness as window dressing because really they are just good at marketing.
Something to that effect anyway. I'm not sure I can articulate it very clearly just yet, but I definitely had an 'aha' moment today after chatting with someone who works in the industry.
Sometimes it hits as very strange, the hollowness of marketing.
A key idea of sustainability is that small scale works well, and the best approach to resilience and climate adaptation is to replicate what works at the local scale hundreds and thousands of times -- not scale up, as so many folks want to advocate (because it is appealing, after all, I totally understand).
I am sad that this simple yet terribly important idea is often lost in general society, at this late date, and late hour, of an advancing changing climate.
Anyway, the local farm stop has a lot of great produce, even more so than the local food co-op, and somehow that felt particularly victorious today.
Cheers.
