Learning to sacrifice your own gain or wellbeing for the supposed contribution to the common good isn't good for anyone. The "noble" sacrifice is a construct the more privileged throw around to perpetuate the myth that hardship and survival is somehow justified, admirable even, and they can go back to what they were doing while pretending not to see you.
American classism is insidious. It is something I have often been shocked to find in the ranks of supposed liberal progressive politics, which at this point I am convinced is nothing but a sham. I am not sure I believe there is a progressive politic, truly. Feminism has met its demise as middle class white women put on the faux fur of female chauvinism. I find I am less concerned about sexism from men than I am with sexism from women along class lines.
I think what I am truly interested in is equality without marriage. The ability to establish a livelihood without the privileged status of married partnership. Not to say that others shouldn't have it if that is what they desire, rather it simply should not be the case that it is a prerequisite for getting by.
Just some rainy day thoughts on a Saturday morning.
